Stone plays an indispensable role in garden design. Where plant materials are soft and transient, stone is stable and abiding. Stone embodies the masculine characteristics of strength and rigidity, providing a backdrop against which the feminine aspects of growth and renewal are made all the more enticing. James Martin incorporates stone in myriad ways throughout his garden designs, from dry creek beds lined with polished river rock to the patterned geometries of textured pavers and natural slate walkways.

Light plays an integral role in garden design. Its power manifests in the nurturing rays of the sun, breathing life into plants and flowers. When filtered by leafy trees and hedges, it creates shaded coves that offer refuge from the heat of the day. Light interacts with the landscape to create vibrant explosions of color that dazzle the eye and soft shadows that provide texture and contrast. As the sun sets, entirely new scenes emerge through the artistic placement of lighting. Floodlights reveal new perspectives on towering trees, while accent lighting creates places for intimate gatherings.

Controlling water in gardens is prioritized in my design considerations. Providing adequate irrigation in times of scarcity - as well as drainage in times of overabundance - are equally important aspects of thoughtful water management. Water is an essential component in the planning, creation and ongoing maintenance of James Martin's artistic garden designs. Like every aspect of our work, we carefully consider our use of water in irrigation and water features. We strive to achieve a balance between aesthetic considerations, the needs of the landscape and impacts on the surrounding environment.
