In 2018, Sarasota County residents voted to fund a northern extension of the Legacy Trail. In June of 2019, the county acquired a former railroad corridor to provide the route for the new trail segment. Some adjacent property owners constructed fences and other structures on the railway corridor before it was purchased by the county. Now, Sarasota County is requiring those encroachments be removed so the property may be used for its intended purpose, to provide the route for the Legacy Trail. Encroachments must be removed so construction on this portion of the Legacy Trail may commence in mid-2020.
