As defined by CSIA, a flue lining is intended to contain the combustion products, direct them to the outside atmosphere, and protect the chimney walls from heat and corrosion. While building code in different localities may vary on lining requirement the CSIA has recommended a flue liner since the beginning of the century and it is now required by most fire codes.
