What began as a small business in the back room of a grocery store, has progressed for generations into a thriving family-owned corporation, supplying their customers with appliances and household furnishings, as well as floor covering and bedding. Charlie and Mary Alice Ruxer opened the doors of Ruxer Furniture and Appliance in 1945 as a bottled gas distributor in the building that also housed the Ringeman Grocery. Today, that property is the location of the Spencer County Bank in downtown St. Meinrad.
I recently bought a washer and dryer and dish washer from Ruxers. Ashlyn waited on me. I teased her and thought now what can a person named Ashlyn know about these appliances-- she needs to be a Mildred or some other older name. Well, I was wrong about Ashlyn-- she was very knowledgeable. I did see her engagement pic in the Herald, Congrats! I also read where she is a fourth generation of the store-- in this day that is marvelous. We have purchased a lot of items from Ruxers and they last forever. My washer/dryer is 25 yrs old, still going but looks like it came through WWII. I have done business with Ruxers for over 25 yrs, they were recommended by some of my co-workers. The big thing I heard was how quick and reliable their service is should something go bad. They did come to the house once to work on my old washer, a piece needed replacement. This was 15 years ago. They also put in our carpeting 18 years ago, came in one morning and by the end of the day the house was done. Carpet still looks good. Ruxers are good people and stand by their merchandise.
