Founded in 1946, Pickens Brothers was formed and specialized in grading. Harold Pickens, Sr. purchased the interest from his brother Fred Pickens in 1948 and the name of the company was changed to Harold Pickens Construction Company. From 1948 through 1956, the company specialized in highway construction jobs. In 1956 Harold Pickens, Jr. (Drew) joined the firm. The company discontinued grading and highway construction to specialize in utility construction. The name of the company was changed to Harold A. Pickens & Sons.

The family-owned and -run company has been operating out of its home county of Anderson for more than 70 years since it was founded by Harold Pickens, Sr. and his brother Fred in 1946. The current principals, who include the President William B. Pickens, Jr. - grandkid to the founders - and Phillip Crocker the Chief Estimator, have over 65 years of combined experience between them in asphalt paving construction.
