Lawlor Architects, established in 2003, is a full service architectural firm based in Capitol Hill's historic district of Washington, DC. With a focus on single family residential work, our firm employs a collaborative and enjoyable design process, taking clients from schematic design through completion of construction. Each client, site and budget is unique and so is our approach to every project. The result is clean, thoughtful and innovative spaces that can be simultaneously modern and classic in their expression.
This 100 year old, 3 story structure had been a boarding house for several decades until our clients purchased it and wanted to update this Washington, DC classic only 3 blocks to the US Capitol. Their program called for a rethinking of all living spaces throughout the house so it would reflect their clean sense of design, love of cooking and uncluttered lifestyles while capturing as much natural light as possible. The design incorporates translucent glass walls, bamboo floors, many custom built-ins, new lighting design as well as all new room finishes and plan configurations.
One hundred years as well as generations of unsympathetic owners and tenants didn't deter these clients from seeing this property as a real opportunity in a prime historic district. They wanted an urban get-away with a relaxed, uplifting and airy summerhouse feel. The house was completely reconfigured to maximize its potential and to shape it around copious natural lighting and the family's social lifestyle. The second floor contains two bedroom, hall bath and generous master suite. Every aspect of this house was reconsidered from interior layout to the lighting design to the heating/cooling systems to the reworking of entire exterior envelope.
