In 1976 Russell and Ruthann Clark proposed to their son and daughter in law, Kevin and Bonita Clark, that they open a furniture store together. The first Wood Stock Ltd. store opened in December of 1976 in Des Moines, IA, and was entirely dedicated to selling unfinished wood furniture. In 1985 we took our first steps into upholstery by opening a new concept store called Sofas by Design. It was a very early, very limited version of our current store. The concept caught on immediately and we became excited about the future of custom upholstery.

We offer hundreds of sofas, chairs, sectionals, ottomans and more in thousands of fabrics and leathers. But dive in even deeper - you'll find customization and personalization options are amazing. All brought together to serve one goal: to create your perfect room. Of course, wood bedroom furniture offers choices in wood finishes and paints. That's only the beginning. We even have a program that lets you configure the case, base, door & drawer fronts, and hardware of your furniture! Custom dining rooms and kitchens begin with your choice of styles.

BY DESIGN offers one the very best furniture protection plans anywhere. One warranty covers your entire purchase - a single item, two items or a roomful. Your upholstery, leather, dining room furniture and occasional tables are covered (separate plans available for area rugs). This is a warranty program - not a chemical treatment. No worries about harsh chemicals or environmental impact. If your furniture is damaged, Montage Furniture Services (MFS) will determine if the situation is best handled by one of their experienced repair technicians or in some cases replacement of the item.
