If your home was built before 1980, it's very likely that the sewer line that runs from your house to MSD's sewer main is made of clay. Clay service lines can crack and/or separate over time causing leaks and allowing roots to enter. While MSD maintains the line to your property, once past that property line, it's the homeowner's responsibility to maintain this vital wastewater line.
