Mount Rushmore, besides being one of the great national monuments and vacation destinations, is also a tribute to surveying. Three of the four presidents pictured were, at some point in their lives, surveyors. Can you name them?
The foot was one of the earliest land surveying measurements. In some regions, the unit was roughly the size of a man’s unshod foot (about 9-10 inches) and in others it was about 13 inches.
For obvious reasons, the human body formed the basis of early measurement standards. The cubit, for example, measured lengths based on the distance from the tip of the finger to the point of the elbow.
Remember, there is more than one type of survey you can have done on land for residential or commercial purposes. These may include a tree location survey, topographic survey and boundary survey.
Land surveying is an art as much as it is a science. A good surveyor has the ability to deal with any issues that are unique to your area as well as your type of land.
