Mattern & Craig was founded in Roanoke, Virginia in February 1978 by J. Wayne Craig and E. K. Mattern, Jr. The firm was established to offer comprehensive civil and sanitary engineering services to public, corporate and governmental agencies. The firm has consistently adhered to its original objectives, and gradually enhanced the capabilities of the firm by adding experts in transportation, structural engineering, surveying, site planning and solid waste. As the firm grew, offices were opened in Kingsport, Tennessee in February 1992; Asheville, North Carolina in July 1994; Johnson City, Tennessee in December 1998; Statesville, North Carolina in November 2013; and Charleston, South Carolina in March 2020.
As Chairman of the Board, Randy serves as the presiding officer of the firm's board of directors. The Chairman guides the board of directors, which oversees the human resources, financial, environmental and technical operations of the firm. He is responsible for establishing and executing long and short term goals and developing the corporate culture for the firm. Randy is a Principal in our Johnson City, Tennessee office and Head of the Design Division. Randy graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1986.

The firm has multiple contracts with the Tennessee Department of Transportation as well as several cities and counties for inspection and construction administration. Our experienced inspectors and construction managers have the necessary training and certifications required to inspect and administer projects involving federal and state funds. Projects often involve citizen participation programs and cost-effective analyses in order to solve issues and problems within a reasonable cost.
