On Saturday, March 14th, the Central KY Wildlife Refuge will host its first Geology Day. We will meet in the parking lot at 10:00 am. Participants will make the short walk to the Cheek Nature Center for a short orientation at which time the participants will decide which activities we will choose for the day. We will offer a tour of an unusual geologic formation that occurs along Carpenter Creek or a walk on the Ridge Trail, Fork Trail, Wildflower Trail, or the Blue Trail. The exact length and nature of the walks will depend on the interest level and abilities of the participants.
The Wildlife Refuge will be CLOSED Sunday morning (3/7/21) for habitat management activities. The parking lot will be unlocked for authorized personnel but all trails will be closed. At least a portion of the trails will be open by mid afternoon, so you are welcome to come out for an afternoon/ evening hike.
We are temporarily closing a few trails at the Refuge, due to soggy conditions. The Circle Trail, Yellow Trail, Blue Trail, and Ridge Trail will be closed for a few days, starting 2/28/21. This rain on top of already wet conditions make those trails very vulnerable to erosion or unsafe footing. We are in for some drying days so this will be a short-term closure, and we'll open them up again soon. Thank you for understanding!
The Wildlife Refuge is now OPEN. As of Monday 2/22/21, our trails are back open. They will stay slippery until all of the snow and ice has melted, and then it will be wet. So BE CAREFUL.
Sorry folks, but we are still CLOSED. Ice is still covering the trees and trails, making unsafe conditions. We will see how the next storm goes and report here as soon as we are able to open back up to the public. Stay safe.
