If you have central heat and air, the ductwork in your house isn't designed to last forever. Click to learn about common signs that indicate the need for ductwork repair or replacement. It's important to understand which type of heating system is best suited to your needs, budget, and location. Click to learn the pros and cons of two common types of household heaters. Freezing temperatures and holiday celebrations are notorious for causing household plumbing emergencies. In fact, for many plumbing companies, winter is the busiest season of the year.

The sickening hiss of a burst pipe does more than keep you up at night. It completely changes the dynamic of your home from a controlled sanctuary to a force of nature. Plumbing can be sensitive, and sometimes a pipe bursts, a basement freezes, drains get clogged, and furnaces can conk out. Issues like these require immediate response and remedy. Certain water-related problems require corrective action, but are not generally considered to be critical in nature - a water faucet that still drips even when turned off, a toilet tank that seems to "top itself off" in frequent intervals, or a garbage disposal in your sink that makes more noise than it used to.

Your plumbing system is one of the most important components of your home. It brings us wonderful convenience to our everyday lives. Most of us are happy to have an indoor toilet instead of an outhouse, and warm bathwater out of the faucet instead of heating pail on a wood-burning stove. We frequently take this convenience for granted - until it's not working perfectly for us anymore. When your plumbing system needs a little TLC, give us a call. Leaking pipes can cause extensive water damage to your property.

Many older homes have boilers in their basements. You've probably seen those old, iron systems that lurk imposingly in the darker reaches of the mechanical room. These boilers have long been the central workhorse of our homes for quite some time. They have kept us warm for over 150 years. A boiler is typically a closed vessel in which water is heated using electrical elements or natural gas. The heated or vaporized water exits the boiler for use in various processes or heating applications, including water-based heating, cooking and sanitation.

When it's 100 degrees outside and the humidity index is through the roof, there is one thing that can alleviate the anguish - air conditioning! Our climate can deliver brutal winters and equally oppressive summers at times. Air conditioning is the process of decreasing the temperature and humidity of air to create more comfortable environmental conditions in a given space. Thermodynamic refrigeration quantifies the process that a typical refrigerator or air conditioner uses - namely moving heat from the inside of the unit or the home interior (the heat source) to the outside (the heat sink).

There is a network of metal channels that form the basis of your home's "lungs." They might look like a covered maze fit for a hamster, but they in fact bring treated air to all reaches of your home. These are your ducts. Ducts are used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) to deliver or remove air. Airflow examples include supply air, ventilation air, return air, and exhaust air. In concert with your HVAC system, air ducts ensure thermal comfort by circulating warm or cool air throughout your building.

There is something magical about winter. A vast blanket of snow covers the landscape, ice skating and sledding replace baseball and biking as outdoor activities, and thoughts of sugarplums dance through our heads. Yes, it is a special time of the year. If your heat goes out, however, winter's magic quickly dissipates. When Mother Nature's frigid temperatures make their way inside, you have a problem. You need immediate assistance from a trusted company. You need Steve's Plumbing and Heating. The furnace is the heart of your HVAC system.

We're in central Wisconsin. It gets cold. Fortunately, home heating technology has evolved from wood-burning stoves to radiant heat (that's your boiler system) and efficient forced-air furnaces. Most modern homes are equipped with a central heating system which provides warmth to the whole interior from one centralized location. The heating appliance is typically located in a furnace room, a mechanical room or a basement, and distributes heat using forced-air through ductwork to the various rooms of the home.

Heat pumps are a great option for your home's heating and cooling needs. They are highly efficient, low cost, and even in our harsh climate can be an effective way to keep your home comfortable year round. A heat pump is an apparatus that moves heat energy from a source to a specific destination, and is used in many heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) devices. Based on the same basic principle as a refrigeration cycle except working in the opposite direction, a heat pump will channel heat into the targeted space rather than the surrounding environment.

Here's how it usually happens: it's 95 degrees outside and the humid reach of central Wisconsin's summers have you at your wit's end. So you go to turn on your trusty air conditioning unit and. Having potential comfort at your fingertips, but not able to use it, is frustrating. It's also quite uncomfortable: instead of watching the Brewers from the comfy confines of your couch, you sit in a pool of sweat, pressing a glass of lemonade to your forehead, wondering how Ryan Braun can muster the energy to drive a fastball into the seats when you can barely reach for the remote.

Down and down it goes, swirling in ever-smaller spirals until all of the liquid in your sink has been whisked away into the unseen labyrinth of our sewer system. At least, that's the idea. Your plumbing system is one of your family's best friends. It supplies you with fresh drinking water, clean water for showers and baths, and removes harmful wastes from your home. But your plumbing system is not invincible. Avoid the most aggravating problem a homeowner can face - a house full of stopped up toilets and clogged drains.

Let's look at three scenarios. In the first, you have no plumbing fixtures at all, just a pipe coming out of the wall. This obviously will not work: you would have water flooding your house contantly. The second is having simple valves at the end of those exposed pipes. This way you can control water flow a bit and avoid a constant flood. These valves, however, would make your entire home look more like the boiler room of an old steamship. In the third scenario, you enter a richly appointed hotel restroom that is festooned with brushed nickel faucets and towel holders, granite countertops, and sparkling porcelain commodes.

There are few more relaxing activities than taking a hot shower after a long day - especially with Wisconsin's winters! Hot water helps get the gunk off your dirty dishes, fully clean your clothes, and makes washing up a more pleasant experience. Hot water is no longer a luxury. It's a necessity. We take our water heaters for granted - you turn on the faucet or the shower and adjust the water to a suitable temperature. It never fails, until that winter morning when the shower runs cold. Although a freezing shower may heighten our intestinal fortitude in the face of overwhelming discomfort, most of us prefer a warmer bathing experience.

Our innovative trenchless sewer repair services allow us to fully repair the sewer line from your house to the street without digging in your yard. This is a huge advance. Previously, plumbers had to put on their hardhats and dig deep into your ground, garden, grass, and sidewalk in order to repair damage to your sewer pipes. At Steve's Plumbing & Heating, we can do a first-rate job without damaging your yard. Your bed of peonies, that hedge of lilac, or your newly poured front walk will all be spared from the backhoe's unforgiving claw.

It's mid-July, and you just came in from mowing the lawn. Summer's stifling heat and humidity are finally upon you, and your outdoor labor has made you into a sweaty mess. But all you have to do is go inside, flip on your air conditioner, and cool, dry air will flood you home and cool your spirits. If you're looking for fast, reliable, fairly priced air conditioner replacement, you call Steve's Plumbing & Heating. Air conditioners typically have a fifteen-year life span, and many begin to work much less efficiently after ten years.

We purchased a tankless water heater from Steve's. Every time one of the guys has been here they have been so courteous and kind. Whether it was helping with our old malfunctioning water heater, or installing the new one, they were so helpful through the whole process. Whether you talk to the people in the office or the plumbers themselves, they are so understanding. Over all a great experience every time!
