Simply put when sunlight hits a solar panel, the cells that make up the module transform light into direct current (DC) electricity. This is known as the photovoltaic effect. This DC power is then converted into alternating current (AC) using additional wiring, an inverter or series of microinverters. The solar energy produced by the PV array powers your home or business and offsets your utility electrical usage. When the sun isn't providing any sunlight for your panels (like at night), your utility provides you with the electricity for your loads.
