We are growing a healthy local food ecosystem by developing facilities and services to help co-located food and farm businesses thrive at our 16 acre site just north of Ann Arbor, Michigan. At our Food Hub, we are creating a community of triple bottom businesses, and a model for regional sustainability and self-sufficiency. We're doing this with small scale local food processing in our 3 commercial kitchens, and with local food storage, distribution, retail and wholesale. We are also demonstrating the value of closed loop energy systems with geothermal lines installed (a heat pump) for heating and cooling, and a 164,000 watt solar array.
For the next couple weeks, we have opened an organic you-pick strawberry patch, only a minute north of the Food Hub in Ann Arbor! Open every day from 9am - 6pm. Enjoy berries right off the plants for $4/qt. Like https:// www.facebook.com /A2Strawberries for updates.
The University of Vermont is accepting applications for its excellent Food Hub Management Program - session starting January 2016. Michigan peeps should apply!
"For legacy food companies to have any hope of survival, they will have to make bold changes in their core product offerings. Companies will have to drastically cut sugar; process less; go local and organic; use more fruits, vegetables and other whole foods; and develop fresh offerings." That's what we're talking about.
A fantastic visit over the weekend to The Plant in Chicago - a food hub, business incubator, farmers market, and closed loop energy/mad science laboratory all in one. Super inspiring to see the work they're doing - and how similar the vision of creating systemic solutions is to ours at the Washtenaw Food Hub!
Did you see September's Ann Arbor Observer write-up about the Washtenaw Food Hub? Thanks for the great story!
