The net earnings of the cooperative are invested in the infrastructure used to provide electric service. Those earnings are carried on our books as capital credits because they constitute the cooperatives working capital and are credited to each customer based on electric usage. Capital credits represent each customers share of ownership of the cooperative. Capital credits are allocated to customers at the end of each year in which the cooperative has a positive net margin. The allocation is a bookkeeping entry, not a cash account, but IREA tries to pay out, or retire, part of each customers allocated capital credits each year.
Intermountain Rural Electric Associations 5,000-square-mile service territory includes portions of 11 counties to the east, west and south of Denver. With more than 160,000 customers, IREA is the largest electric distribution cooperative in Colorado and one of the largest in the U.S. As a customer-owned cooperative, IREA operates on a nonprofit basis; earnings exceeding expenses are invested in the facilities used to provide electric service and are booked as member equity. Some of this equity is returned to members almost every year, as finances permit, through capital credit refunds.
New construction procedures apply to the construction or installation of a new facility that does not yet have electric service. New homes and businesses where construction has been completed and electric service has been installed are not considered new construction from an electric service standpoint. Consumers requiring electric service at these locations should visit our Start/Transfer Service page for information on how to obtain new electric service. When an individual contacts the association regarding new construction, a work request will be opened.
IREA is committed to affordable clean energy. Our 2021 power supply will include 25% renewables, and by 2025 we will have nearly 200 megawatts of renewable energy capacity on our system a significant step forward from the less than 10% renewables we had in 2013.
