It was a land of berry bushes, tall timber, chicken ranches and fishing boats. Accessible only by water and populated only by a hardy sort, the Peninsula area during the early 1900s. As a frontier made the slow transition to civilization, the progressive among this land realized they could not afford to be left out of industry's evolution toward electrical power. Soon it became obvious that no outside agency was going to provide an electrical utility in the Peninsula area. A handful of local residents realized that if they were to ever see lights in their chicken sheds and their homes, they would have to make it happen themselves.
Electricity produced from solar energy systems that are installed on members' homes and businesses is a growing resource that is being utilized in our neighborhoods. To demonstrate the viability of these systems, we have installed a 4-kilowatt system on our warehouse, assisted with the installation of a 5-kilowatt system owned by non-profit organizations at the Key Peninsula Civic Center in Vaughn, and sponsored a community member-owned, 60-kilowatt system on the Harbor History Museum in downtown Gig Harbor.
Altered Service can include converting your overhead line to underground, relocating your service (e.g., as part of a remodel or expansion of your structure), or upgrading your service (such as increasing the capacity of your service). As you alter your existing service we will work with your schedule to minimize your time without power. If the existing service you are altering is overhead, you'll be required to underground the service (some electrical contractors may not be aware of this). Engineering Services can help you ensure proper installation.
Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula contain hundreds of independent water systems of various sizes. When PenLight recognized this posed a quality of life issue for its members, a Water Services department was created to address that need. Water quality is a real concern for our growing community as state and county agencies add new requirements for water testing. Water Services can provide a complete analysis of your water, identifying any possible microbial or chemical contaminants. If necessary, we can disinfect your water source and implement other water protection strategies.
That's why Peninsula Light is taking a lead role in promoting energy efficiency amongst our members and community. Besides helping protect our natural resources, like trees, water, and fish, PenLight members who partner with us in efficient use of electrical energy can see some real savings in their monthly utility bills as a result of their efforts. Rebates for ductless heat pumps, air source heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and smart thermostats are available for qualified residences. Businesses should check out our Commercial Lighting and HVAC upgrade rebates.
