Hi, my name is Matthew Rhoden owner of M&R Roofing and Repairs. M&R Roofing and Repairs, LLC is a family owned and operated company from Delaware, Ohio. We have been in business for over 17 years and growing. My father Oliver Rhoden with over 40 years experience was a roofing company owner himself and is now retired with a green thumb. Although I was too young to take over the company, he left me the experience and determination I needed to own a quality roofing company. I still turn to my dad for advice from time to time.

Although sometimes wrongly called fungus, the dark stains on roofs are usually caused be algae like we find in swimming pools and on the grout between tiles in bathrooms. An alga staining is most prevalent in areas with significant humidity; it can make a roof unsightly. Plus the dark stains tend to absorb more ultraviolet light; which might cause some degree of additional heat build-up in a poorly ventilated attic.

Lack of information: The contractor (and homeowners) have not done their homework. The contractor blindly bullies ahead with the job without making any effort whatsoever to do any research. A simple search on the internet can yield a wealth of information about slate roofs, sources of correct tools, materials, supplies and installation techniques. All slate is not the same: You wouldn't buy a car without looking at different models and checking their track record - and cars only last ten years and are cheaper than slate roofs!

A valley is a line where two roof planes intersect. Here in Central Ohio we use a metal flashing in the valleys. Some areas use rolled roofing. Other places simply lace the shingles together. Valleys can be big problems if you do not trim the shingles correctly. When you trim a shingle for a valley you end up with a chisel point on the end of the shingle. If a second cut is not made to make this point like an arrow point, then water can travel along the top of the shingle and find its way inside your house.
