Recyclable materials must be clean and properly prepared. On collection day, the bin must be at the curb and five feet away from your other garbage. Additional carts: trash, recycling and compost are $60 available at the Sanitation Department. Rinse clean and flatten. Labels are okay. No caps. Small-neck containers marked "1" or "2" (examples include milk and water jugs, and laundry bottles). Plastic bags (retail and grocery bags). NO TV trays. NO motor oil containers. Place newspapers in brown paper (or plastic) bag, or tie in bundles, and place inside or next to recycling bin.

The Building Division is responsible for the enforcement of building codes and zoning ordinances and subsequently maintaining records concerning the construction, alteration, or demolition of buildings or structures. In 2004 a Michigan State law went into effect causing all communities to adopt and enforce two uniform building codes known as the "Michigan Building Code" and the "Michigan Residential Code". The purpose of the codes are to establish the minimum requirements to safeguard the public health, safety, and general welfare through structural strength, means of egress facilities, stability, sanitation, adequate light and ventilation, energy conservation, and safety to life and property from fire and other hazards attributed to the built environment and to provide safety to fire fighters and emergency responders during emergency operations.
