Challenge Asphalt was founded by Dewayne Copus in 1961. He'd leave the house in his pickup truck with his trailer in tow, loaded with a couple of drums of seal coat looking for jobs to do. Dewayne's dream over 50 years ago has now become our legacy as the leading paving contractor in Santa Barbara County and Ventura County, as well as one of the top asphalt paving firms in the state.
A well paved asphalt driveway provides a safe environment for kids or grandkids to run and play on, eliminates unwanted mud and dirt from being tracked into the home and beautifies and adds curb appeal and value to a property. A residential driveway is built by first grading and compacting the sub soil to 95% relative density. Depending upon the traffic index, which is typically provided by a soils engineer, a road bed consisting of crushed rock and sand is laid, typically 4" - 6" thick. This material is fine graded, watered and rolled to a compacted density of 95%.
There are many benefits of choosing asphalt for your home driveway, including increasing curb appeal and home value, providing a safe and clean traffic area, management of runoff water in unwanted landscape areas, durability and flexibility and ease of maintenance and affordability compared to other surface options. Typically, most issues associated with residential asphalt driveways are due to lack of appropriate maintenance. Timely asphalt maintenance, such as seal coating and crack or pothole repair, will help restore, weatherize and protect your driveway until a complete resurfacing is needed.
Commercial asphalt is an investment that provides serviceability and enhancement to the appearance of a property. Our goal at Challenge Asphalt is to help protect and maintain that investment. Our team is often asked about asphalt maintenance of a new parking lot or roadway. What we tell our clients is when maintained, a well paved parking lot should last approximately twenty years. Within that time frame, you should plan for at least one complete resurfacing or overlay. Typical maintenance involves seal coating with Guard Top seal coat, which we broom on for thicker wearing surface, within the first year of installation and resealing every four years.
