Since 1973, we've grown from local geotechnical engineering specialists to a firm with national reach and expertise in engineering, design, environmental sciences, and construction services. We work in the industrial, government, facilities, commercial, landfill, energy, and transportation industries, and are experts at navigating complexity of every description, from adverse land and soil conditions to compliance and regulation hoops. Safety guidelines are our favorite reading material, and where others may see it as tedious-we thrive on reliability and quality control.
S&ME formed in 1973 when founders Glenn Futrell and Bob Owens began providing geotechnical and construction materials engineering services to clients. A decade later, in 1983, S&ME grew to a company of 500 employees in 15 offices across six southeastern states. This set the stage for even more. As the company expanded, we added several environmental services that in turn, increased our staff of experts. Today, in 2020, S&ME is a thriving company of dedicated individuals with vast technical expertise throughout 34 offices in 11 states.
S&ME has a proven history of delivering engineering, environmental, and construction management solutions for transportation projects to include airports, rail/transit systems, roads, bridges and ports. S&ME offers extensive resources. For decades S&ME has served the electric power generation industry. Our clients include government-owned, investor-owned, and local municipal-owned utilities, cooperatives, and privately owned merchant companies. The US has become one of the world's largest producers of oil and gas.
Collaboration is not just a word. It is the essence of who we are and what we do. Internally, it means fostering a culture of creative collaboration in order to harness the best of our talents and energies. Externally, it means building a sense of shared. Construction materials engineering and testing provides an owner with confidence that their investment is built in accordance with the project's plans and specifications. Our experienced engineers and certified technicians provide. Environmental managers today wear many hats, often juggling employee health and safety responsibilities, on-going compliance programs, and closure of legacy contamination issues.
Collaboration is not just a word. It is the essence of who we are and what we do. Internally, it means fostering a culture of creative collaboration in order to harness the best of our talents and energies. One of the most interesting aspects of civil engineering is the ability to work with people as part of a team. There is a tremendous satisfaction that comes from a collaborative effort with our clients, government officials, and other design professionals. The challenge of solving a whole host of issues on a diverse range of topics that affect our daily lives is its own reward.
Geotechnical engineering is fundamental to all construction. For over 40 years S&ME has provided sound design advice on foundations, slopes, retaining structures, embankments, tunnels, levees, wharves, landfills, pavements and other systems that are made of or supported by rock and other engineered materials. Our geotechnical engineers understand the behavior of earth's materials and their impact on a construction project. Founded as a geotechnical engineering and materials testing firm, S&ME remains a leader in providing comprehensive geotechnical services.
Construction materials engineering and testing provides an owner with confidence that their investment is built in accordance with the project's plans and specifications. Our experienced engineers and certified technicians provide a broad suite of construction tests and inspections, all performed under a Quality Program designed to meet rigorous ASTM and AASHTO requirements. Understanding the importance of timely reporting, our testing and inspection reports are prepared on-site and uploaded to a cloud-based reporting software, reviewed on-line, and electronically distributed to project stakeholders.
The staff at S&ME has in-depth experience in the planning and design of residential development projects ranging from multi-family homes to large-scale master-planned communities to senior living facilities. We work with developers and architects throughout all stages of development from master planning, due diligence and initial site selection, to final design and construction document preparation. Our designers are committed to developing residential areas that foster good living environments with harmoniously organized streets and integrated public spaces.
Maintaining safe, reliable, and resilient water systems is vital to our communities and to our environment. A combination of population growth, aging infrastructure, reduced supply, and complex regulatory environment require a comprehensive approach to preserving and sustaining precious water resources. S&ME partners with our clients to provide a comprehensive range of solutions - from treatment, conveyance, distribution, and storage to management of the environmental impacts associated with water quality.
Our experts help guide commercial developers through all phases of land development, from conceptual design, survey, environmental analysis, permitting, to final design and construction. Our professionals collaborate with developers, planners, architects, and owners to design site features that provide efficient, practical and affordable development of basic infrastructure needs such as water and sewer. We are able to guide clients through the permitting and zoning of a commercial development, as well as perform routine site inspections and conduct stakeholder meetings.
The US has become one of the world's largest producers of oil and gas. The abundance of oil and gas found from drilling in the US shale plays has caused a revolution in the rethinking of the future of energy production. S&ME has quickly developed the reputation in this market as a full service, go-to consultant. Our dedicated oil and gas team provides civil and mechanical design, environmental permitting, geotechnical evaluations of HDD and earthen construction, and construction inspection and testing services.
