Studio Build

Jerad is a third generation carpenter. He is the liaison between the design & build sides of our work. He walks the fine line between bringing projects in on budget while maintaining the design intent. He spends part of his day working at Studio Build as a designer; the other part of the day is spent on job sites working for Foster's Inc. as the General Contractor for our work. Jerad's interest in Modern Architecture and furniture from the 1950's & 1960's has led to an extensive designer furniture collection.

Studio Build was tasked with converting a 60 year old tire retreading warehouse into a gourmet chocolate production facility. The end result is a +/- 10,000 sq.ft. The Shelby Herrick Salon is located on the ground floor of the newly constructed Woodside Village Apartments. The original space was tall and narrow so it was our goal to bring the scale of the volume down to a more human and intimate scale. An angular ceiling greets the customer at the front door and undulates all the way to the back of the space where it folds to form the second floor mezzanine.

This was a fun little project! Our clients recently exchanged the suburban life filled with home and lawn maintenance for a life living in a downtown Kansas City condominium. Wanting to put their touch on an already nearly perfect space, they contacted Studio Build to design a home theater and fireplace. The fireplace is constructed of horizontal white oak slats burnt in the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban. The burnt surface provides a unique color and texture to the wood. New electronically controlled shades complete the living room, providing access to the downtown skyline at the flip of a switch.
