Community Frameworks' Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP), funded by annual grants from HUD, provides zero-interest, forgivable loans to nonprofit organizations and public agencies sponsoring sweat equity homeownership programs in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Sweat equity, or self-help housing, involves homebuyer and volunteer labor in new construction or the renovation of existing homes, thereby reducing purchase costs and providing a means by which low-income households can achieve homeownership and build financial assets.
