Laminated residential glass is manufactured similarly to car windshields, in that two pieces of glass are laminated with a polyvinyl butyral (PVB) inner layer. If the glass is broken, it will crack but stick to the plastic layer, significantly reducing the danger of lacerations.
If you want to add light to a room but still maintain privacy, consider using glass blocks. These can be used in a window casement, or as part of a wall between rooms. They let light pass through, but do not reveal what is on either side of the blocks.

Low Emissive (Low-E) glass is a high performance glass made with a thin, almost invisible metallic coating that is designed to block heat flow. The low-E glass keeps the heat outside by reflecting the sun’s rays.
