Caltrain provides commuter rail service along the San Francisco Peninsula, through the South Bay to San Jose and Gilroy. The San Francisco and San Jose Railroad Company began passenger rail service on the Peninsula in 1863. The system we know today as Caltrain had its start in 1992, when the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (PDF Agreement, 1.42MB) took over the operation of the train. Vision: Provide a safe, reliable, sustainable modern rail system that meets the growing mobility needs of the San Francisco Bay Area region.
With an annual ridership of over 14 million commuters, Caltrain provides rail services between San Francisco and San Jose. Our ability to provide safe and efficient transportation services is greatly impacted by federal, state and local legislation and regulatory policies. Caltrain's Government Affairs staff is responsible for developing and coordinating the organization's legislative program at the federal, state, regional and local levels. The Government Affairs team monitors and analyzes the impact of legislative and regulatory issues, and develops a coordinated strategy for responding to these issues.
Caltrain has developed a recycling program that makes it easy for customers to actively help the environment. At the San Francisco station, place bottles/cans, papers, food and trash in the appropriate bin. Bins are placed throughout the station and are clearly labeled. At all other Caltrain stations, Caltrain has developed a partnership with its janitorial service and waste management contractor to sort offsite. This allows customers to place their recyclables, food and trash in the same bin. The contents are transported by Republic Services to Newby Island Resource Recovery Park.
