Blackburn Architects, P.C. was established in 1983 as Smith Blackburn Stauffer Architects to provide full-service architectural design and planning services for our equestrian, residential, and conversion clients. We are a small firm based in Washington, DC, with a satellite office in San Francisco to better serve our West Coast clients. Our horse barns are known throughout the world for their healthy focus: we design for maximum light and ventilation so all occupants (human and equine) enjoy the space and thrive.

With all the recent horror stories we have been hearing about the wild fires across the southwest and California, it is nice to hear a good outcome on occasion. We received such an email last week from one of our clients. The message notified us that their residence, designed by Blackburn Architects, PC and constructed by Crocker Homes, found itself in the middle of the Seven Fire, a wild fire, that blew through the foothills of the Sierra Mountains on July 10th. Finished earlier this year, the four bedroom, 3,950 square foot private residence is located in Seven Legends Ranch overlooking Lake Don Pedro.

By offering four (with more to come!) pre-designed barn models, Blackburn Greenbarns reduces the design fees associated with custom design. These four barn models, which can be tweaked and modified (just ask us), use the same principles that make Blackburn Architects, P.C. the leading experts in equestrian design in order to provide clients with the same standards of excellence at a stricter budget. We want you to know you don't have sacrifice the look, the functional quality, or the sustainability to get the savings.

Architecture is by its nature often a wasteful process. Demolition and new construction can result in the misuse and waste of numerous resources. Buildings account for a third of all the energy used, half of all electricity used, and a third of all greenhouse gases produced in the United States. Architects can make an enormous contribution to changing the negative impact of our buildings. For this reason, we work to find ways to cooperate with natural forces instead of competing with them. Our buildings are designed to reflect the architectural vernacular of a region, yet remain effectively "green" without sacrificing aesthetic beauty.

For more than 30 years, the Blackburn brand has been recognized worldwide as carrying the highest standard in the design of equestrian facilities. More than architects, we are innovators. A soft, lightweight triblend t-shirt in a stylish charcoal or black - featuring Blackburn Architects logo. Care: Machine wash / tumble dry. Sizes: S to XXL. Healthy Stables by Design turns the idea of traditional sheltering practices for horses on its ear, introducing the concepts of aerodynamic ventilation, strategic natural light, and passive solar heating and cooling into compelling horse barn designs ranging from exquisite to functional and everything in between.

What's new?

FRESH AIR & NATURAL LIGHT. If you've been following Blackburn's work for any amount of time, you know that we maximize both fresh air and natural light in all our buildings (even covered arenas!).
