Natural slate stone roofs can offer a distinct character to a building. Available in a variety of colors, thickness, dimension, and texture, these roofs can achieve quite a variety of looks. Fired from clay, roof tiles come in a variety of shapes, colors and textures. From natural earth tones to glazed color finishes, tile roofs will be a dominant architectural feature to a building. While tile and slate will endure for 150 years or more, the metal flashings that carry the water at the joints of the roof will start to fail after 60 years or so.

Established in 1979, Dave North Roofing Corp. directly employs its entire workforce. As tile roofing and slate roofing specialists, we do not sub-contract our work out to others. The highest quality tile roofs are fired from clay offering a hard baked non-porous surface that will hold up to the freeze/thaw winter conditions found in Wisconsin. These tiles are virtually non-weathering and look like new after 100+ years of exposure to weather. Clay fires naturally to an orange terra cotta color but colors can be added to create a full range of earth tones. Tiles can also be fired with a glazed color that offers a glossy surface which often comes in shades of green. There are many shapes and sizes from barrel tiles to flat tiles.

Bison Wood Deck Tiles offer the design flexibility to create versatile, unique outdoor spaces. Commercial grade, responsibly harvested, hardwood tiles weather well and install over adjustable height pedestals which are designed to be compatible with today's rubber or roll roofing systems. The adjustment in pedestals allows the roof to have an aggressive pitch toward the drains while the deck remains perfectly level. The deck tiles are also removable for maintenance of the roof below. Whether it is repair, replacement, or just cleaning leaves and seeds that settle under the deck, the wood deck tiles are easily lifted and reinstalled.

Because slate is stone that is formed in compressed layers, it can be hand-split into smooth thin pieces that have been used for roofing for centuries around the world. Thickness and dimension vary depending on how the stone is prepared. There are a variety of natural colors (green, gray, purple, black, and red) to choose from. Some colors will weather to earth tones with exposure to weather. Other colors have natural ribbons of darker shades within each piece. This variety can create slate roofs that offer a distinct beauty to different styles of architecture.

One of the most overlooked part of a building is the gutters and downspouts. Gutter design on new buildings is almost an afterthought. Not with us. After over 40 years servicing some of Wisconsin's most historic buildings in communities like Milwaukee, Shorewood, Whitefish Bay, Fox Point, Bayside, and Wauwatosa we understand the importance of having a sound system to carry the rain off the roof in a controlled fashion. The winters in Wisconsin present an especially difficult challenge with gutters on tile and slate roofs because of the ice sliding off the roofs and building up at the eaves.

When purchasing an older home with a tile or slate roof it is important to understand the condition of the roof, gutters, and downspouts. Because most slate and tile roofs in Wisconsin in areas like Milwaukee, Shorewood, Whitefish Bay, Fox Point, Bayside, Wauwatosa, and Lake Geneva are 90+ years old, they can be in quite a variety of conditions. Unless a roof has been completely restored recently there are likely to be some repairs that the future owners will need to deal with. Buyers need to know the extent of these repairs in order to make an accurate judgment of the value of the house for their offer.
