Designed to serve the needs of the Abbot on the grounds of the Houston Zen Center, this 1,200 square foot residence provides private living spaces and gardens on a busy urban site. Planned for flexibility of use, the plan allows for a small suite of rooms just inside the front door to be isolated from living spaces by means of a large sliding door, to serve as space for student/teacher meetings during meditation retreats. Articulation of the floor plan maximizes private views while optimizing solar orientation and allowing for the development of private gardens as outdoor rooms.
This new house for a young family with three growing boys, set on a carefully-selected corner lot, is designed to reflect the Owners' thoughtful preferences. A big front porch, a large play yard, and a paved running/biking track looping around the house give the boys ample opportunities for outdoor activity. The living room and dining room are open to each other and connected to the large kitchen, while a covered back patio extends entertaining space outdoors. An efficient mudroom at the back of the house provides ordered space where everything (baseball gear, brooms, recycling, dog food, etc.) has its place.
A new kitchen and a bigger master bath and closet had been on this couple's wish list for a long time. With children grown and on their own, it was time to refresh the family home. In the kitchen, all new appliances and finishes sparkle and the shallow pantry cabinet provides readily visible storage. In the master bedroom addition, a cozy window alcove for seating was added along with a walk-in closet and large bath. The homeowner worked with the contractor to save out some of the tile and glass block work so she could do it herself.
