Merritt Arch's roots began in 1975 when James R. Merritt FAIA established his first independent architectural practice. Merritt has been a principal of many firms since this time, collaborating with others with common interests for varying periods of time. In March 2001, Merritt, then principal of an architectural firm of 40 and partnered with a multi-disciplined engineering firm of 325, decided to reorganize his practice to focus on personal, hands-on client service and quality design. He did this by forming Merritt Arch PLLC, which, for the last seven years, has established itself as a leading architectural firm in Tacoma and throughout the Northwest.
As Architects we choose a wider definition of Architecture that includes the design of the total built environment, from the macro level of how a building integrates with its surrounding man-made or natural landscape to the micro level of architectural or construction details. Merritt Arch's focus is the design and construction observation of building projects. Our base project types include schools, offices, historic preservation, planning, restoration, parks and recreation, community centers, religious facilities, transit headquarters, and public administration buildings.
