Boyd Haney began his career in arboriculture in the 1930′s with the Village of Oak Park. In 1940, Boyd left Oak Park with a vision to provide top quality tree-care to his customers. That year, Boyd and a partner started American Tree Service. Shortly thereafter, Boyd bought out his partner and renamed the company B. Haney & Sons. From the beginning, B. Haney & Sons was a family affair, Boyd doing the sales and treework, his wife Gladys keeping the books and answering the phones. In the late 1940′s their three sons: Jack, Bill and Jim joined the company.

An arborist is a specialist in the care of individual trees. Arborists are knowledgeable about the needs of trees, and are trained and equipped to provide proper care. Hiring an arborist is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Proper tree care is an investment which can lead to substantial returns. Well cared for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability. Pruning or removing trees, especially large trees, can be dangerous work.

Spraying / Pest ManagementProperly maintained trees are better suited to fend off insect and disease problems. Diseases can be fungal or bacterial, brought on by weather conditions or insects moving from tree to tree. Plant Health CareIf we can catch a problem early or before it starts, the remedy may be easier and less costly with less damage to the plants than if the problem has been allowed to become established. Wood Waste RecyclingThe tree material generated by our tree care operations along with logs, brush and woodchips taken in from Villages, Park Districts, Landscapers, and other Tree Companies is processed into mulch products.

At B. Haney and Sons we have been recycling our wood waste into mulch, a reusable product, for many years. This is beneficial for two reasons, no dumping fees and less fill in the landfills. You might say we were "Green" before Green was cool. Is re-shredded mixed mulch that is excellent for mulching and healing in landscape plants. This mulch has a fine texture and a natural appearance. This mulch is suitable for use in commercial landscapes. Fine textured mulch, excellent for landscaping plants, trees, bushes, etc. Close in color, with a finer texture of our Grade #3.

When removal of a tree becomes necessary B. Haney & Sons will make the process as safe and easy on your property. We don't advertise much, we rely on customer referrals. In other words we want satisfied customers. The branches will be chipped up, the logs will be hauled away, and your yard will be clean when we are done. Stump grinding is also available. We have a small, medium, and large stumper depending on the size of and the access to the stump.

We have experienced Certified Arborists on staff to help you inspect and evaluate your trees. We trim trees to extend their usefulness in the landscape. Various methods of trimming and pruning are utilized to accomplish this goal. There are many methods of trimming trees depending on the reason for trimming; here is a list of the methods we use to help you determine what type of work you would like done. General Tree Trimming - Also referred to as "Crown cleaning", consists of the removal of deadwood 1/2 inch diameter and larger unless otherwise specified, removal of loose, broken and potentially hazardous branches, cutting back branches to provide minimal clearance for structures and utilities.

We offer consultation services for the customer who wants more of an informational quote as opposed to a free quote left in the mailbox. A consultation is different from a free estimate because of the time spent with the customer. Free Estimates are good when asking for general trimming or removal but if you have questions you would like to have answered in a face to face meeting, we recommend you have a consultation. Consultation fee is $105.00 for the first hour and $75.00 for every hour thereafter, this fee must be paid at the time of the consultation.

With the warm spring weather approaching the trees will begin to break their dormancy. During this time the new foliage is fresh and vulnerable to fungal infections. Quite often the symptoms of the fungal diseases do not appear until well after the initial infection begins. Along with watering it is important to look at the leaves of your trees. Problems may exist if the leaves have holes or are shriveling, dropping, turning brown, yellow or onto early fall color. Make sure your trees and shrubs go into the winter months with adequate moisture in the soil.

When the cold keeps you inside, remember your trees are still outside. They are much hardier than we are. They cannot run away from their troubles. Trees and shrubs that grow in this area have the ability to "Hibernate". The metabolism of the tree slows down and chemical changes take place in the tree sap to allow the tree to withstand the severe cold temperatures. Research shows the tree's roots remain active even in frozen soils. This is why we need to make sure the soil is moist in the fall. On rare occasions there can be drought conditions in the winter if there is no rain or snow for extended periods of time.
