The story of our company starts 20 years ago when it was just a boy and a push mower. It started as a part time job to make money while in High School. In 1998 Ben decided to create Hawcott Lawn Service and grow the business. We learned early on that a commitment to honesty, personal relations, and quality products and service would take us where we wanted to go.
Keeping your plantings and beds free of weeds is just as important is keeping weeds out of the lawn. Weeds in the bed are competing for the same nutrients and water your desired plants are. It is important to keep the weeds under control so that the desired plants are under as little added stress as possible. Extra stress on plants can increase the signs of insect and disease pressure. There are several ways to provide weed control, pre emergent (before the seed germinates) or post emergent (after plant has started growing).
It is important to understand one thing. Plants are living and they grow. It does not matter what type of plant you have in your landscape, at some point or another it is going to need some sort of pruning. The pruning may be for aesthetics, safety, or the overall health of the plant. Depending on what type of plant you have will usually determine when you prune it. Evergreens are best pruned in Late Summer. Evergreens need regular pruning. It is very difficult to prune an evergreen back and make it look right if it has been allowed to become extremely overgrown.
Proper mowing is just one of the many factors to take into consideration when trying to create a lush thick stand of turf. Grass that is properly mowed will have fewer weeds, require less watering, stay greener longer into the drier periods, and will have fewer insect and disease problems. Hawcott Lawn Service provides Commercial and Residential mowing services. We maintain a fleet of push mowers, mid-sized walk behind mowers, and larger commercial riding mowers to handle any situation. We can provide you with regular scheduled weekly mowing, bi-weekly mowing, or one time mowing events.
You will never know from year to year whether or not you will have a problem with grubs. Just because you have had problems in the past does not mean you will have problems in the future. Generally we will encourage a preventive grub treatment if a lawn is thick and lush and/or if it has an irrigation system. We tend to notice more problems with these types of lawns. Grubs feed on the roots, which causes the grass to dry out and turn brown during the hot periods of the summer. In some cases this will kill the grass plant.
We take plants and planting very serious at Hawcott Lawn Service. One of the most important things to do when creating a new landscape is selecting the right plant for the site. We try to understand the environmental conditions of the site, the soil types, and possible pests of the sites we work with. All of our plants come from suppliers and growers in Iowa or areas North of Iowa. This means that the plants will be more winter hardy in this area than if they came from areas South of Iowa. When designing a landscape it is importand to have a good balance of hardscapes (walls, patios, structure) and softscapes (plants).
Whether it is a small landing by your front door or a 900 sq ft patio with bench wall seating and an outdoor fireplace, patios and walkways can add functional space to your landscape more than any other hardscape element. There are many options when it when you consider what type of material you want to use with your patios. Natural stone is another option for patios and walkways. They are a great choice if you like the looks of natural stone. Natural stone is the more expensive choice for a patio.
Core aeration is often one of the most overlooked services when it comes to a healthy lawn. It is also one of the most important things you can do to keep your lawn healthy. In Central Iowa the soils contain clay. Claysoils compact more than soils that contain sand. Grasses growing in compacted soil have difficulty establishing a good root system. The grass is slower growing and under stress. Compacted soil can increase the amount of weeds established in the lawn. Some weeds thrive in compacted areas where the grass plant struggles.
