This bedroom renewal can be far less expensive by simply changing the headboard of the bed. It will take your bedroom to a totally different level by punching it up several notches, and also bringing romance to your bedroom decor. The hallway sometimes is the forgotten area in a home and the last place we think of decorating. We think of hallways as transitional places which we use while moving from one room to the next. These three embellishments alone will make the hallway into its own room, which can make it as inviting and eye catching as any other in the home.

This client removed the guest room's double window and installed a sliding door to the deck. With a trellis and a flowering vine for privacy, a chair and a small table for coffee or a drink, a little "island" of privacy was created! Pillows and a small, colorful rug could be added for ambiance. Try it! Your overnight guests will enjoy this cozy little place, as well as yourself when you have time for a quiet moment.

Instead, art should be hung at eye level. As a guideline, when art is hung above furniture, make sure that it is 8 inches above the top of the piece. It should look like they sit together. Here is one of the beautiful rooms that we have designed! If you "liked" our Blog, please LIKE us on Facebook. Far from boring or bland, neutral paint colors create a sophisticated backdrop without stealing the limelight from other furnishings. Why not give it a try!

Skylights can create a warm glow. Long, slender skylights positioned along a wall cast a warm, indirect light that doesn't overwhelm the space. Skylights can bring sunshine to a narrow urban home. Skylights can help reduce energy bills. Skylights can help grow healthier houseplants. Skylights can boost your mood. Natural light has an undeniably cherry effect!

These soft greenish-blue hues work especially well for bedrooms and bathrooms where they offer a calming sea-inspired vibe.

Re Upholstery: People often want a soft seat, but we have found that it's more important to get a soft pillow back. That's what gives you that luxurious feeling when you sit down. Re Black: Have a touch of black in every room, and use at least one antique to give the room soul. Ottomans keep layouts mobile. They work as spare perches or side tables. We love ottomans in front of a hearth. And in warmer months when your fireplace is dormant, you have something pretty to look at!

It's rearranging pieces you already own. Changing the the placement of your furniture can make all the difference. Interior Designers can create the best furniture plan for your room, balancing practical considerations with creative risk-taking. We choose the best location for each item. Adding, subtracting or relocating furniture affects how natural light plays in the space and also how frequently the room gets used. For example, by simply adding a bench to a wall, a room can become more of a hangout.

A question often heard by clients of interior designers is "What size rug should I buy for my room?" Generally, it is the bigger the better. But obviously you don't want a rug that is so big that it hits the baseboards of the room. A generously sized rug can make a room feel complete and welcoming. Otherwise, the room can feel as though the furniture is floating, especially with a hard surface floor such as concrete, wood, or vinyl tile. On the other hand, you can go almost wall to wall with a rug by leaving just a foot or two of border around the edges of the room.

For a more informal look, consider trying painted stair runners. They create the illusion of a runner, but are a lot more casual. And, the design options are unlimited. They are perfect for the traditional house, a country-style home or a vacation retreat. They're cheaper than carpet and can be done yourself. You need a little time, patience and attention to detail. Before painting, fill in the cracks with wood filler, sand the surface smooth and apply primer if the surface has not been painted before.

An area rug beneath the dining table should extend at least two feet beyond the table's dimension in each direction. What you don't want is that whenever you pull out a chair that the legs get caught in the rug. We hope you'll be enjoying many dinner parties in your pretty dinning room! It's important that curtains are measured, designed and sewn correctly. If you can't afford them right now, put up bamboo blinds or leave windows bare until you can have the real thing. The layout of a kitchen can be the deal breaker for whether or not you buy a house.

The design project for this client presented a few good challenges. He was moving from a large house he had sold to a small rented two bedroom apartment in Town Center in Annapolis. The client did't want to bring anything from his previous house with him into the new apartment. He wanted everything to be new, with some exceptions as his musical instruments and computers. We at FLAIR INTERIOR DESIGN loved that aspect of things! We were given carte blanche on the design, but he wanted to approve everything first, and his requirements centered on having an uncluttered and contemporary style.

Our last blog on rugs mentioned the correct size of a rug for a particular sized room. This blog will speak in general about the beauty and magic or oriental rugs for your home. The history of oriental rugs is lost in antiquity, but the oldest rugs and fragments of the oldest rugs found through excavations can be seen in museums. St. Petersburg, Russia. Through carbon dating, this rug dates to the fourth century B.C. Another of the oldest rugs, the Ardabil rug, can be seen at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Here are the steps that take place in one of our consultations. After the client contacts an interior designer, the designer will schedule an initial consultation, which may last one or two hours. The consultation is important. First of all the client and the designer get to know each other. After a walk-through of the space, they discuss in detail the specific requirements for the project. The client details the problems areas and thoughts regarding solutions, and his/her vision for the space. The designer in turn offers suggestions about the client's goals and how to reach them.

Always let the activity of the room dictate the furniture arrangement. In a space where you entertain, create conversation areas where the guests can chat. People often just want to plunk down a big sofa, be we find it unusual for three people to sit side by side on a sofa together and turn their heads to talk. Chairs are better, if you love to entertain!

Now that summer is upon us once again, we are all looking forward to using our outdoor spaces more frequently. Why settle for a dull designing scheme? Designing a patio, veranda, terrace or any outdoor space presents the same challenges and opportunities as any interior space. Lighting, artwork rugs, furniture, accessories - all create a sense of place. All those elements which create a successful interior can be used in an outdoor space as well. For example, why use an uninspired and bland set of matching outdoor furniture, when for maximum interest you can blend and layer some old pieces with new, for a more interesting space.

Although black, white and gray are not featured on the color wheel, they play and important role in Interior Design. These three colors are referred to as non-colors. They provide respite within a room without changing or altering the other colors in the room(s). They also provide a bridge to all periods from contemporary to traditional design. BLACK can be used in a subtle or in a starring role. Black and white schemes are a classic in both Interior Design and in apparel designing. As a supporting role inside the home, think of the thick slab of black granite in the kitchen, or the black wrought iron bed in the bedroom, or a black iron lamp in the living room Black is bold and sophisticated and usually looks best used in moderate or small doses.

We adorn our bodies with fabrics, and we can do the same with our homes. It is a matter of how we put it all together, reflecting our personality, and how we present ourselves to the world. Fabrics are a core element of interior design, and thus an important part of how a room is furnished. Fabrics are ubiquitous in a room. From the covers of the sofa and chairs to the window treatments, each element in the room co-exists with all the others in terms of color, pattern, and texture. Creating a successful room is all about the choice, arrangement, and interplay of prints, patterns, and solids on furniture, pillows and drapery, and how those fabrics mingle with the walls, artwork, carpets and rugs.

Mirrors can do three things for a room: make it appear larger, make it brighter, while adding beauty themselves. They are timeless, striking, and versatile accessories. No matter where you put one, mirrors are an easy way to make a space seem bigger by reflecting light and giving the illusion of depth. For example, putting a large mirror in a small space expands the room and creates the sensation of a larger room. In bathrooms and dressing rooms they are a practical necessity, but mirrors have a variety of uses and can be used throughout the house to beautiful effect.

Whatever the style of your home, flowers are the perfect way to add beauty, comfort, and warmth to your decor. A bouquet of flowers can be used in any room from the kitchen to the living room, and even in the bathroom. Flowers brighten our day and lift our mood and spirit with their charm, elegance, and color. They breathe new life into any room. Beautiful flowers make us happy by their presence. They are always the perfect accessory. Please visit us on Facebook. If you liked our "design tip" today, please "LIKE" us on Facebook.

Need a quick perk up for a blah room? Placing beautiful fresh flowers and green plants in a room will instantly perk up a blah room and will give an instant lift to your spirits. Lighting should not be an afterthought in creating a well appointed room. It should have the same importance as the color scheme. Lighting can make rooms look bigger and turn unused areas into useful ones. To get the most out of light, you will use three types of lighting: general, task, and accent. Here you see these beautiful glass spheres by Bocci being used as "accent" lighting.
