Farms can cover vast amounts of land, so it's common to encounter many different buried utility lines, including natural gas pipelines, electrical lines, water lines and cable and internet lines on your property. Alliant Energy offers a free tool to let you know where these lines are buried, so you can stay safe and avoid hitting them. When you call 811, a professional locator will come to your property to mark a natural gas pipeline or other utility-owned lines in the ground. If there's a major pipeline near your farm, a utility employee will monitor any digging activities in person to increase safety and reduce the risk of accidents.

At Alliant Energy, our purpose is to serve customers and build strong communities. We are focused on powering beyond the market challenges of today, while powering what's next in energy. Alliant Energy is a component of NASDAQ. Through its utility subsidiaries Interstate Power and Light Company and Wisconsin Power and Light Company, Alliant Energy provides regulated electric and natural gas service to approximately 960,000 electric and approximately 410,000 natural gas customers in the Midwest. Our corporate headquarters is located in Madison, Wisconsin.

Energy theft is the illegal practice of manipulating or bypassing natural gas and electric meters to avoid paying for some or all of the service used. Electric service wires to homes and businesses deliver enough current to kill. Using metal objects and tools near the electric current in these lines can have devastating and deadly results. Tampering with natural gas meters and equipment can cause leaks and potential carbon monoxide problems that may result in very dangerous situations for the neighborhood and community.

Raw natural gas is colorless and odorless. As a safety precaution, Alliant Energy adds a harmless odorant to the natural gas to give it the distinctive rotten egg smell. Natural gas is lighter than air, so it will rise and disperse if allowed to vent freely. Your safety is important to us. We recommend homes and business have natural gas detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. Follow the manufacturer's directions for operation, placement and maintenance. In addition, before the heating season, we recommend you have a professional come to your home or business and inspect your fuel-burning appliances and all heating and venting equipment.

Nearly 75% of all power outages in our service area are repaired in two hours or less. It's important you let us know if your power goes out. More information helps us know how large the outage is and pinpoint the possible cause. Once we're aware of an outage we send our crews to the area where they will make repairs and start the power flowing again. When this process is complete, your home may still be without power. That means there is damage to your home's electrical system and you will need to contact a licensed electrician.

By law, we can only repair the incoming service line and your meter. Depending on where damage is located, you may need to contact a licensed electrician for additional repairs. Learn what equipment customers are responsible for fixing, and what Alliant Energy will take care of. Unfortunately, the worst disasters attract some people who are looking for a financial gain from others' loss. Most reputable contractors will not solicit you to repair damage to your home or business. It's best to be careful when choosing who will do the work for you.
