Our Electrification of Transportation Strategic Roadmap describes our plans to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuel for transportation as well as electricity. Renewable energy growth and electrification of transportation (EoT) are complementary, greater clean energy impacts and customer value can be created by achieving both in tandem. EoT will integrate with and support programs that facilitate integration of renewable energy, enable greater customer engagement and empowerment as "prosumers" of energy, and enhance grid efficiency and reliability by leveraging the flexibility of electrified vehicles.
Light-Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs use about 6-8 watts to create the same amount of lumens as a 60 watt incandescent light bulb. They are also about twice as efficient compared to compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), saving you money with each use! Two fans, rather than an 8,000 Btu/H (British thermal units per hour) room air conditioner running four hours a day, will save more than 1,150 kWh and $345 per year. Switching from Hot Wash/Warm Rinse to Cold/Cold cycle on a standard top-loading washing machine for just two loads a week can save 225 kWh and $68 per year.
Our company and employees are dedicated to serving the communities of Hawaii. We're investing in our infrastructure by upgrading utility poles, transmission lines and more. We are focused on partnering with independent power producers to develop the next generation of clean, renewable energy systems. Hawaiian Electric plans to build battery energy storage systems on company-owned land at Waena near the Central Maui Landfill and at Keahole Power Plant. These self-build projects will help the electric grid to accommodate more renewable sources and ensure grid stability while reducing thermal plant emissions.
Hawaii’s booming economy and growing population in the 1960s sparked a demand for more electricity. Crews in 1966 trekked high above the Koolau mountains to connect new power lines to an already existing 138,000-volt transmission system. This would help expand our power network to meet the...
Our new program called Quick Connect will allow customers adding rooftop solar on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii islands to install and energize new systems without waiting for the sometimes time-consuming approvals. Quick Connect will provide a quicker reduction on these customers’ monthly electric bills...
Electric vehicle drivers on Oahu and Maui have more options to quickly power up with our recent installation of seven new publicly-access ible, fast-charging stations. The new DC fast chargers can provide over 40 miles of additional range for a typical EV in 15 minutes and incentivizes drivers to...
