Chesterton Feed & Garden Center, originally Chesterton Feed & Supply, has enjoyed a history of more than 80 years of serving the Chesterton community. Since the early 1930's, the business has changed ownership five times, gone through three name changes, and two changes of location. In the 1960's, the business was evolving from a feed and supply store to an up-and-coming garden center. The name change reflected the times, and the store became known as Chesterton Feed & Garden Center. Through the mid-1960's to 1980, under the ownership of Miss Laverne Burchfield, the store was remodeled and updated, including the addition of a state-of-the-art Lord and Burnham greenhouse.

Originally, the business was located in the Pine Tap building on Calumet Avenue and was known as Chesterton Feed & Supply. In 1938, Ben Bellman purchased the business and moved it to Grant Street in Chesterton. The store provided the town of Chesterton with farm and grain products. Rudy Bellman, Ben's brother, took over the business in 1943 and owned it until his death in 1954. His wife, Ruth, continued the business until 1955, when Everett Hundt of Wanatah purchased the company and renamed it Hundt's Feed & Garden Center.

People often ask Chuck what sparked his desire to own a feed and garden center. As a kid growing up in Chesterton, we owned horses, dogs, cats, raised poultry, and had gardens. I was fascinated with the birds that came to our feeder and enjoyed bird-watching at an early age. I started into college studying veterinary medicine, but switched to horticulture and haven't looked back! Chuck's first connection with the store was when, during one of the family's many shopping visits, Chuck's mother asked Ms. Burchfield if she needed any help.
