The goal of the South Street Headhouse District, (SSHD) is to provide a safer, cleaner, well managed business district so that the area will continue to improve as a place to work, visit, shop and live. The SSHD was established in 1993 as a locally directed Municipal Authority, (its authorization was extended in 1998 and again in 2018), for the purpose of improving public safety, cleaning and other services to supplement services being provided by the City of Philadelphia. The SSHD continues to plan and support physical improvements, marketing and promotional initiatives designed to enhance the image and visibility of the business community as one of the most dynamic and diverse areas anywhere.
