Thomas R. Mutz (1920-1992) was born in Edinburg, Indiana. Tom was a young child when his family moved to Indianapolis, where he lived until 1964. He graduated from Indiana University and served two tours (one aircraft carrier based) in the Pacific during World War II as a Marine fighter pilot flying the Chance-Vought F4-U Corsair. Immediately after the war, he entered the family heating business owned by his father, Frank M. Mutz, I and Uncle Harold W. Mutz. At the end of his life, Tom's philosophy on managing a heating and air conditioning business was well known in the industry: Do the job right the first time, tell the truth, ask for business, be fair to your people and reward hard work and success and keep the accounting and paperwork simple but have plenty of simple and easy to understand metrics telling business operators what they were doing well, so-so, and where they were falling short.
