At the turn of the last century, George Durban was the gardener for a well-to-do Clifton family. When he wasn't tending their grounds, he was growing his own plants and flowers on the side, a hobby that would prove to be much more. Eventually, George saved up enough money to build his own greenhouse, accommodating his growing collection of flowers and plants. When wife Mary asked, "What are you going to do with all of these flowers?" George got to work selling them. The business began in earnest then, in 1904, as George left the gardening job and built more greenhouses.
