Crawl spaces that are vented and have dirt floors are called open crawl spaces. These crawl spaces let in humid air from the outside and moisture that's evaporating from the ground. Moisture can also arrive from evaporation of water that may have entered the crawl space due to a plumbing leak or improper drainage systems.
