I started Mr. Pack Rat in 2004 with 29 years of prior pest control experience. I began my career in 1975 working for the nation's largest family-owned pest control company. A company with over 1,000 employees and 72 branch offices in eight states. Branch Manager - Casa Grande, Dallas/Ft. I loved customer service and solving difficult pest problems, but was disappointed with the exterminating industry's over-reliance on pesticides and poisons to solve problems. I knew there was a better way. In 1997, with my wife, I started an alternative pest company, KSB Pest Prevention, focusing on prevention with minimal chemical application.
Pack rats are attracted to any area that provides opportunities for safe harborage. An ideal harborage is accessible to the pack rat, but not to its many predators including bobcats, owls, snakes and coyotes. A vehicle engine compartment is close to perfect. Additionally, the sound proofing insulation under the hood provides excellent nest-making material and engine wires are just right for the chewing necessary to maintain sharp teeth. Many newer cars have engine covers and shrouds that provide hiding places even when the hood is open.
None-soon & pack rats Tucson is on track to have our driest monsoon season in the last 125 years. We are in a real drought and this is putting pack rats under a lot of stress.
Unfortunately, some people still use rat poison. An adult great horned owl can eat several pack rats every night. Poison is ineffective for pack rats and dangerous. Educate your friends and neighbors - don't use poison. There are better ways.
