In the early 1970's Green Guerillas began rallying people to use community gardening as a tool to reclaim urban land and bring people together to solve problems that plagued their neighborhoods. We are the oldest community garden organization in New York City. More than 600 community gardens serve as testament to the skill, creativity, and determination of New York City's community gardeners. We support the efforts of these remarkable grassroots leaders and help create the next generation of community gardeners.
We help community gardeners strengthen important community gardens, sustain vital grassroots groups, produce bountiful community harvests, and engage and educate youth. Green Guerillas distributes soil, lumber, herbs, and vegetables seedlings to food-growing community garden groups in central Brooklyn, Harlem, and the South Bronx to help them grow bountiful harvests of tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, and callaloo. We also help community gardeners extend the growing season and engage more people in the harvest.

We invited our youth to hold space for their feelings and reflect on how their communities have changed through covid. We are forever inspired by their honesty, creativity and resilience 💚
