Returning Students Most students who complete the First Year program return at least one more summer (often several) to produce an entire Shakespeare play. We are an unlikely bunch with wildly divergent personalities and background stories who otherwise might never have met, let alone come together as an ensemble. But we have forged a community, and at its heart is unwavering acceptance of each other as we explore different ways of expressing the text and ourselves. Six years ago I heard about the Young Shakespeare Workshop and longed to be a part of the summer program but due to certain circumstances was never able to.
Young Shakespeare Workshop, a nationally recognized and awarded non-profit arts leader, is a community of young people, teaching artists, alumni and family who care deeply and passionately about performing Shakespeare. Programs are tuition free and engage a wide spectrum of individual participants. Academic year projects and residencies provide opportunities at high schools serving predominately low-income students where theatre arts are severely limited or unavailable, while summer programs draw together participants from all around Seattle and King County, offering multi-year opportunities for continued depth of skills, growth, and community.
