Soapstone is steadily gaining popularity as one of the best materials to use for countertops, stone fireplaces, sinks, and more. Due to its impervious qualities, soapstone has also been used to fabricate chemistry lab tops, acid room sinks, and lab shelving (fun fact: M. Teixeira Soapstone has supplied soapstone to many high schools in the NY area). Read on to learn all about our favorite stone. Soapstone (also known as Steatite) is a metamorphic rock that consists primarily of talc. Depending on the quarry from which it is sourced, it also contains varying amounts of other minerals such as micas, chlorite, amphiboles, quartz, magnesite and carbonates.

Alberene Soapstone. Currently the only available domestic soapstone in the US market, this beauty is quarried in the beautiful state of Virginia. This stone's unique mineral composition gives it a special texture to the touch and once traditionally treated with mineral oil will go from the ash gray.
First two images show our Santa Rita Soapstone. Hearth, surround and firebox. Notice the herringbone pattern. Third and fourth images show Basaltina, a natural stone quarried in Italy that is formed by the rapid cooling of lava. Notice the side columns, seem monolithic but they're actually made.
Since we opened in 1998, we've seen trends come and go. There was the time of Corian, the green granites, then yellows, then came the glittery quartz, now there's porcelain with natural stone prints, and so on. Soapstone however is timeless, it never did nor will it ever be "dated", because of.
