Industrial Sheet Metal Worker welders fabricate and install ductwork for dust collectors, ovens, stacks, particulate reclaim systems, and paint booths. Welding heavy plate ductwork in sometime unfavorable conditions. Much of your work will be in manufacturing, assembly and power plants. Sheet metal workers are unique in the construction industry as the only trade that designs, manufactures and installs our own products. The term "sheet metal" refers to any metal that can be formed into flat pieces of varying thicknesses. Using specialized tools, these skilled craftspersons take ordinary types of flat metal and make them into specialized products for various duct and ventilation systems, as well as architectural and specialized metal fabrication. Members of the trade are proud of its special distinction: They not only build; they create.

Architectural sheet metal is a combination of technical skills and artistry. As an apprentice, you will specialize in fastening and joining, managing expansion and contraction, sealing, and controlling moisture to ensure the appearance and durability of buildings. You may spend a good part of your career working at large commercial/industrial sites or residential jobs. The majority of your work will be outdoors. In 1887, Robert Kellerstrass, secretary of the Tin and Cornice Makers Association of Peoria, Illinois-a local sheet metal workers' union-began agitating for the formation of a national sheet metal workers' union. Contacting as many tinsmiths' locals as he could, Kellerstrass arranged for a founding convention to be held in January 1888.
