Stanley C. Bierly's offers traditional and alternative heating systems from sophisticated Solar Hot Water Systems, Geothermal, and Air to Air Heat Pumps to simple but elegant High-Efficiency Woodstoves.
Heatpumps are a great way to save money heating your home. They also do air-conditioning in the summer time as an added bonus! This combination of heating and cooling that you get with a heatpump is often a better value than just getting air conditioning alone as it allows your investment to save you money on your heating bills. Heatpumps can normally reduce your heating bills 25% to 70% depending on your current heating method/ fuel source. Have you ever notice how the air is warm behind your refrigerator but the contents in the refrigerator are cold?
Geothermal systems are heating and cooling systems that can heat air and/or water. They use the refrigerant cycle of a heat pump with a heat source derived from the stable and warm temperatures of the ground rather than the variable Air temperatures (Air Source Heat pump). As you can imagine when the air temperature is 10 degrees outside the ground temperature 6 ft to 200 ft below the ground is closer to 45 degrees. There are 2 main ways of extracting heat from the ground for these systems. The first is an open loop or pump and dump system.
Fireplaces arewhat is referred to in our industry as a zero clearance appliances. Fireplaces allow you to frame the appliance in with wood and drywall. They are designed and insulated to be installed this way. After they are installed you can add whatever mantel, surround, stone, brick, tile, wood work, etc. that you want. You do not have to go through the expense of having a complete masonry fireplace installed with a chimney. Most of the gas Fireplaces can be vented out the wallof the home or business as a direct vent.
Boilers get there name from their history of creating steam for use in power production, central heating systems and use in locomotives. Boilers come in basically two types; hot water boilers and steam boilers. Steam Boilers heat the water in the boiler to a temperature that reaches the boiling point (212F depending on altitude). Steam takes up almost 1000 times more space (volume) as the same amount (volume) of water so the steam energy from expansion moves the steam through the piping to heat the different radiators of your home.
Furnaces are often used as a general term for that thing in the basement that heats my house. A furnace is an appliance that heats and moves air. Appliances that heat water and use radiators are called boilers. Furnaces normally burn some type of Fossil Fuel Like Gas, Propane, Oil or even coal, pellet or wood. They all have the same thing in common that they have a blower that pushes air across a heat exchanger in the furnace and picks the heat up which warms the air and pushes it out the registers in your floor, walls or ceiling.
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) as a term has been around a long time but it has become more important in the last decade as home building envelopes have become tighter. Indoor air can be 5 to 10 times more toxic than outdoor air. Allergies have become more of an issue for people, and products are being made that off gas VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds). There are a lot of elements that go into play when we talk about indoor air quality. Problems range from dampness or high humidity in a home or air that is too dry.

Keeping your home COOL in the summer time is often best done with a Central (for whole home comfort) or Ductless Air Conditioner (for zoned or Area comfort). In Central PA we want our AC systems to dehumidify just as much as we want them to cool our homes. Comfort is measured not only with temperature but humidity as well. Caves maybe cool but it is typically very humid and not comfortable to live in. A lower humidity level in the home allows you to be comfortable at a higher home temperature as well.
Fireplace Inserts are a great way to make efficient use of an open masonry fireplace. Open fireplaces are typically nice for looks but often only provide about 20% of the usable heat into the room and normally pull air from outside into the house to replace the heat and the air that goes up and out the chimney. This will sometimes cool other areas of the house more than the fireplace will warm it. A fireplace insert allows you to efficiently burn propane, natural gas, wood or pellets. Fireplace Inserts require a masonary or an approved manufactured fireplace to use them as they typically have no heat protection.
