Does your 20-50 year old house still have its original electrical service? If so you are probably in need of a new one or at least in need of a look over. The exterior of your electrical service is exposed to all the elements and should be checked out frequently for damage. Here we will show you some things to look for. To the left is an old meter base, note how it is round. Newer style bases are rectangular in shape. Also note the cloth covered cable, newer cables are made of plastic sheathing.
First place to start is the electrical panel. Below are 2 electrical panels not in production anymore. We highly recommend replacement of these panels due to them not being reliable when it comes to overloads. It is good to also check for signs of rust on your box. Water and electricity don't mix and water always wins. If you see a lot of rust on the bottom of your electrical box like this picture below, you could be getting water from outside. This should be checked out A.S.A.P. It's also a good idea to make sure there is proper space around your electrical box.
