Scan Home was founded in the summer of 1983 by Carl and Barbara Propes. They shared a dream of bringing moderately-priced disassembled contemporary Scandinavian furniture to the Alaskan market. Five containers of furniture were imported that summer from Denmark as a test and sold at the old sports arena on Fireweed Lane (now occupied by Arctic Office Products). The following spring Carl and Barbara opened a 3,100 square foot store on West 36th Avenue in Anchorage. Carl and Barbara's children, Lindsay and Alex, often played in the store while they were growing up and acted in some of our early TV ads.
