In 1911, an ambitious engineer named George Neumark established Illinois Cleaners as a full-service cleaner, launderer and furrier. Illinois Cleaners was a robust cleaning operation serving the suburbs of Chicago until the 1960s. In the 1960s, the dry cleaning industry entered the "polyester years." During a period of just four years, the number of dry cleaners plunged from 40,000 to 18,000. It was at this time that the Marberry family seized the opportunity to enter the cleaning business. William Marberry and his four sons acquired many of the leading cleaners in Chicago's western suburbs.
