In 1989, Jim Ahern worked in the family construction business, serving as the general superintendent on numerous large projects around the state of Connecticut. As the company became more apartment development and management focused, he took the leap and started Litchfield Builders as a sole proprietorship specializing in remodeling in Connecticut. Early on, Jim collaborated with his brother, Kevin, who handled estimating and proposal work for many large projects.
