Architectural Woodcraft was started in 1989 to meet the area's growing need for the preservation and restoration of historic buildings. We helped renovate many of Asheville's architectural gems, such as the Basilica of St. Lawrence, the Grove Arcade, as well as many private homes. Our shop has grown over the decades and we now do much of our woodworking in contemporary and modern styles and techniques. Areas of particular expertise include custom doors, windows, cabinetry, furniture and architectural details.

Architectural Woodcraft has been a major contributor to the exciting revitalization of Asheville and Western North Carolina since 1982. We have developed a solid reputation for providing residents and businesses with fine craftsmanship and superior service. We offer expertise in historic renovation, clear customer communications, and a knowledgeable, highly accomplished staff. We are fully capable of managing projects that range in complexity from custom entrances to large-scale property restoration.

Architectural Woodcraft has been building windows and doors since its inception. Whether duplicating historic structures, or the latest contemporary pivot doors, we do it all. Door styles include: lift slide, pocketing, and folding. We've fabricated grand entrance doors such as those on the Basilica of St. Lawrence Cathedral. Our window varieties include Euro-style triple glazed tilt turn, historic double or triple hung, arched tops, casement and more. We pride ourselves in our capability to produce virtually any style door or window to fit your project.

Architectural Woodcraft can meet your needs no matter what the style of your custom kitchen and bath. We can even help you design and engineer it. We use 3/4-inch plywood on all sides and backs of your cabinetry. We have incorporated steel, reclaimed wood, copper, galvanized metals, and wood slabs in our construction. We build a lot of contemporary kitchens, but we also enjoy working in more tradition styles, too.

Historic renovations are a cornerstone of our business. We've been fortunate to work in the resurrection of some of Asheville's finest structures including the Grove Arcade, the Federal Courthouse, the Manor Inn, and the Basilica of St. Lawrence. National Park projects include Bodie Island Lighthouse and Apostle Island Keeper's Quarters. If you have an older, historic home or building that needs special attention, whether windows, doors, or cabinetry, we can do it for you.

We fabricate cabinetry from historic to the very latest contemporary styles. We use the greenest formaldehyde-free plywoods and all water-based top coats. We pride ourselves on being one of the greenest cabinet making shops in the area. Unlike many shops, we build all aspects your cabinets in-house. We like to work with our clients and architects to help engineer and design cabinetry to be both functional and beautiful.

Our furniture styles vary wildly. They usually come about when a client needs a special piece to fit a very particular space. These include: dining tables, beds, side tables, chairs, and dividing walls. We will sit down with you and sketch out ideas until we come up with a designed piece that will meet your needs.

At Architectural Woodcraft, we are constantly growing in our creative capacities. Responding to growing interest in contemporary and modern designs, we have expanded our capabilities and now have a separate 2500 square foot metalworking studio. We use this space for fabricating steel components for furniture, cabinetry and doors. Sometimes the component takes center stage, as a primary design element, like it does in this wood table with extraordinary steel legs shown in the photo. Other times, we use steel as hidden reinforcements of wood furniture, cabinetry or architectural features, to give them the strength to do something we couldn't do with wood alone.

One of our specialities is creating new windows for modern homes and reproduction windows for historic structures. For new construction and modern homes, we can create custom window sizes of almost any size and configuration. We were among the first companies in WNC to offer custom European tilt and turn windows. In addition, because we create custom casement, double-hung, picture, awning and inward opening windows in any shape and size, we are a favorite resource for architects and designers. We have had windows tested for LEED and Energy Star certifications and can advise homeowners on the requirements.

This magazine profiled how our shop has benefited from the revitalization of Asheville, N.C., our quality craftsmanship in both traditional and modern designs, and our commitment to our customers. Architectural Woodcraft worked on many areas of this beautiful, modern home, designed by Carlton Architecture. We built the unique kitchen cabinetry using reclaimed wormy chestnut and wormy oak and a 15 foot walnut counter with a natural edge. We also built the large front windows, exterior doors and some custom furniture.

Since our beginnings, renovating historic buildings has been a major focus of our work. Over the past decades we have restored and renovated some of Asheville's most important buildings. We can repair and restore windows and doors to be energy efficient and put them back into their original condition. When the original item is damaged beyond repair or is missing, we are able to duplicate the original woodworking, using the same materials and techniques as the original. We have have experience working with the National Register of Historic Places, the National Parks Service, The Asheville Historic Resources Commission, The Preservation Society of Asheville & Buncombe County.

With the cornerstone of Architectural Woodcraft in historic preservation, we feel that one of the most important aspects of "green building" is building something to last for generations. Everything we build is created with this enduring quality in mind. We are also mindful of our responsibility to our customers and to future generations by building with an environmental ethos every step of the way. We are able to create new windows and doors in custom configurations, that are able to meet the most rigorous energy efficiency standards.
