In a radiant floor heating system, warm water flows through flexible plastic tubing called PEX that is located underneath or within the floors. In addition to the PEX tubing, the other main components in a radiant heating system include a heat source, pumps, manifolds and controls. The heat source in a hydronic radiant floor heating system is typically a boiler or a hot-water heater. However, other heat sources can be used, including highly energy-efficient sources such as geothermal and solar. And because a radiant floor heating system is designed in zones, you have the luxury of changing temperatures for each room, depending on its use.

When B&L mentions geothermal, we are referring to a geothermal heat pump or ground source heat pump (GSHP) in a central heating and/or cooling system that transfers heat to or from the ground. Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are electrically powered systems that utilize the stored energy of the greatest solar collector in existence: the earth. These systems use the earth's relatively constant temperature to provide heating, cooling, and hot water for homes and commercial buildings. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has called ground source heat pumps the most energy-efficient, environmentally clean, and cost-effective space conditioning systems available.
